Our Spirit bear "tooth beary"
The Background
Broadway Station Dental Centre is one of Vancouver’s most established and recognized dental office. The practice opened in 1947 in east Vancouver at the intersection of Broadway and Commercial. During these sixty years, dental health has undergone significant changes in its delivery likewise has our office; initially a staff of three to currently twenty six, six dentists and twenty auxiliary personal. Drawing from seven countries and speaking nine languages, it is representative of the rainbow of multi-culturalism in Vancouver.
To recognize the tremendous support we have received from the people of Greater Vancouver, it would be appropriate to return something unique back to the community.
Our staff chose BC. Lions Society for Children’s with Disabilities. We thought that we could bring a communal smile and some colour to our neighborhood by purchasing a Spirit Bear in the City. The Lions society commissioned Mandy Boursicot, a local artist of merit, to create a bear that depicts our office. “Tooth Beary”, named by a patient was founded. On March 17th, St Patrick’s Day, our bear will be unveiled on the northwest corner of Broadway and Commercial with much anticipation of our staff and patients. It can be seen from the Sky Train and will become a focal point of the busiest intersection in the city.
We will have “Tooth Beary” to promote Dental Health Month in April, hopefully this will encourage people to be aware of the importance of looking after their teeth and gums.
“Tooth Beary” will be located on our corner until October, 2006 where upon the BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities will be auctioning it off at their Gala Party. The future of “Tooth Beary” and other Spirit Bears will lie in the hands of the Auctioneer. Who will bid for our Spirit Bear? Where will its new home be? Possibly at the entrance to the new dental school at UBC? Keep posted for the journey.
